DJ AM Also Known As Adam Goldstein (36) Was Found Dead Last Friday. Many Stars Show Up for His Memorial.

DJ AM also known as Adam Goldstein (36) was found dead

DJ AM also known as Adam Goldstein (36) was found dead in his apartment around 5:20 PM on Friday in New York City. TMZ sources say DJ AM had not been seen or heard from for a few days, one of his friends went to check on him, but got no response after knocking on his apartment door. The friend called the cops but it was the fire department who finally entered his apartment and found the body. Prescription pill bottles were found near his body and a glass crack pipe was also found inside the bedroom.

DJ AM is the former boyfriend of Nicole Richie, he also dated singer/actress Mandy Moore. He was originally a member of the band Crazy Town, known for their hit song Butterfly. DJ AM has been featured on albums for Madonna, Papa Roach and Will Smith. Just last year in September 2008, DJ AM was seriously injured in a plane crash with Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker. That crash killed two crew members and two other passengers.

Sources told TMZ that DJ AM had been "completely devastated" over a recent breakup with his girlfriend, Hayley Wood. The couple split within the last week, she was the one who called off their relationship. DJ AM has been sober for nine years, but the sources say the breakup and the stress over the plane crash could have caused him to start using drugs again.

Celebrity friends and fans have taken to their computers to tweet their thoughts about the passing of DJ AM. Below are a few of those tweets.

In DJ AM's last Twitter post written on Tuesday, he recalled a line from a Grandmaster Flash song: "New York, New York. Big city of dreams, but everything in New York ain't always what it seems."

Law enforcement sources are saying that DJ AM's death was the result of an accidental overdose and it was not a suicide. DJ AM was a recovering addict that developed a dependency to Xanax as a direct result of the plane crash a year ago. He, understandably, developed a huge fear of flying but still had to fly frequently for his job. Doctors began prescribing Xanax and other anti-anxiety medications to relieve his fear of flying, but the benzodiazepines triggered a relapse into addiction.

TMZ sources say DJ AM's relapse was "recent" -- he was not abusing for a prolonged period of time before his death. They also said the OD had "absolutely nothing to do with his recent breakup." The evidence strongly indicates cause of death will be a combination of crack cocaine and benzodiazepines.

After yesterday's funeral for Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein (36) a private memorial was held on Thursday, September 3rd at the Palladium in Hollywood, California. There was an impressive turn out of around 2,000 mourners that showed up to the memorial.

Many stars showed up to pay their respects. Nicole Richie, Robert Downey Jr., John Mayer, Lindsay Lohan, Samantha Ronson, Mark McGrath, Scott Caan, Tom Arnold, Dr. Drew, Eric Dane and Rebecca Gayheart were all spotted entering the venue. According to People, model Haley Wood, whom Goldstein had recently been dating, spoke during the service, saying "He was my soulmate and now he is my soul. He is my amazing grace." Nicole Richie (27) dated DJ AM for several years beginning in 2004. Richie gave DJ AM's parents a hug before sitting down in the front row. She cried during the entire service, which began at 7:30 p.m. PST and lasted more than two hours, an eyewitness tells Usmagazine.com.
