Hunky Actors of the 80s and 90s: Keanu Reeves, Tom Cruise and Dennis Quaid
This is the third article in the series that cover the handsome actors of the 80s and the 90s. The first article covered Mel Gibson, Kevin Costner and Michael Douglas, while the second covered Christian Slater, Brad Pitt and Patrick Swayze. This one is a tribute to Dennis Quaid, Tom Cruise and Keanu Reeves.
Dennis Quaid was born in 1954 and got his first movie gig in 1975 (however he was not credited). He slowly built himself a solid career and by the late-80s, he was getting many lead roles. In 1989, he got to play famous rocknroll singer Jerry Lee Lewis, co-starring with Winona Ryder. The movie was called Great Balls of Fire, named after the famous Jerry Lee Lewis song of the same name. He pretty much took part in all the movie genres possible and co-starred with popular actresses such as Sharon Stone, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Angelina Jolie, Madeleine Stowe, ex-wife Meg Ryan, Natasha Richardson, Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep. Dennis Quaid still remains a household name for many generations and keeps playing both leading and supporting roles.
Tom Cruise first got attention with the movie Taps (1981), where he played the leader of a troops consisting of his fellow military school students and classmates. The leading roles belonged more to Sean Penn and Timothy Hutton and all these three actors went on to become respectable actors, although Tom Cruise went on to become more popular faster and followed a much more mainstream career. It can be attributed to the fact that Timothy Hutton was in fact offered Tom’s role in Risky Business but turned it down to work with Sydney Lumet. Since then Tom managed to become Hollywood’s most sought after leading men, starring after one blockbuster after another and making a name as not only a talented actor but also a favorite hunk of many women. He is also one of the most successful actors when it comes to maintaining his form, health and youth. Mission Impossible 4 is in the works.
The world is divided into two groups when it comes to Keanu Reeves’ acting talents: those who think he is a capable actor and those who think he is not. Whatever your verdict on Reeves is, one thing remains certain: Just like Tom Cruise, he quickly established himself as one of Hollywood’s most popular leading men. He starred in sci-fi (The Matrix Trilogy), action, romance (The Lake House, Sweet November), comedy, thriller (The Watcher), animation (A Scanner Darkly) and fantasy. Keanu was born in 1964 but casting agents are still having trouble in casting him as a man over 40. In 2009, he co-starred in the intriguing film The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, and played the part of a 35 year-old. Keanu first gained recognition as Ted, in the movie series called The Excellent Adventures of Bill and Ted. He became an action star with Speed (1994) and gained the cult sci-fi star status with The Matrix movies. Keanu is one of the luckier actors who have managed extreme popularity, maintained the youthful looks and kept his private life very private all at once.
